Collections at the Laboratory are available for research to qualified researchers for scientific and educational research within normal business hours. Researchers must agree to abide by the Laboratory of Archaeology’s standards of collection management and use. Access to the collections is contingent upon submittal and completion of the Collections Research Access and Use Form, which is approved by the Director and the Assistant Director based upon collection (s) availability and research objectives prior to the agreed upon arrival date (s). Visiting researchers will be provided with space for analysis, photography equipment, microscopes, associated maps and documents, in addition to more specific tools such as scales, calipers, etc. Use of copy machine and associated supplies will be charged to the researcher. Per Georgia law, the Laboratory prevents access to site location and information for the general public therefore; the Laboratory limits access to the collections to Laboratory staff, authorized visitors, and qualified researchers.

Requests for access to all material, including human remains and associated funerary objects, not under complete control by the Laboratory must be cleared with the federal or state agency that does have final control over the collection. It is important to remember that such collections may be subject to tribal consultation and access may be limited due to NAGPRA agreements or negotiations. For access to collections owned by state and federal institutions there may be specific access guidelines that need to be addressed before research is conducted. Researchers interested in accessing the Laboratory of Archaeology’s collections should contact the Laboratory Director, Dr. Mark Williams at jmw@uga.edu or the Assistant Director at arobthom@uga.edu.
