Abstract

The proposed project would replace the bridge over Peachtree Creek on State Route (SR) 3/Northside Drive between Peachtree Battle Avenue NW and Wesley Drive NW in Atlanta, Georgia (Figure 1). The existing bridge consists of two 10-foot travel lanes with a 10-foot left tum lane, and a 5-foot barrier separated sidewalk on the west side. The existing approach is two 10-foot travel lanes and a 10-foot two-way left tum lane.

The proposed roadway would replace the two 10-foot travel lanes and 10-foot two-way left tum

lane. The proposed bridge section consists of three 10-foot travel lanes, a 2-foot shoulder, 4-foot bike lane, and a 5-foot sidewalk on the west side. The eastside will have a !-foot shoulder, 4-foot bike lane, and a 10-foot multi-use path connecting paths in Atlanta Memorial Park with the Peachtree Creek Trail.

Required right-of-way (ROW) varies between 10 and 40 feet along Northside Drive/SR 3 and between 5

and 15 feet along Woodward Way and Sagamore Drive. The total length of the project is 0.19 mile.

Two sites, 9FU42 and 9FU57, are located within I Ian of the APE (Figure 3). Information about these sites is limited as there are no associated archaeological reports. Site 9FU42 is located within the grounds of what is now the Ahavath Achim Synagogue. According to the site form, it was recorded in 1974 by Rupp and Pennington of Georgia State University (GSU). The only description provided on site form is: "plain pottery, badly worn." The site form for 9FU57 was produced in 1975 by Carnes and Rupp of GSU. The site is described as a village site located on the north bank of Peachtree Creek east of Northside Drive and north of the Bobby Jones Go1fCourse. Both sites are of unknown eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Two sites associated with the 1864 Civil War Battle of Peachtree Creek are located near the project area. Site 9FU46 was recorded in 1974 during an archaeological survey carried out by Georgia State University (Mathews 1974).

Three NRHP eligible historic districts and two NRHP eligible historic properties are located within the survey area. These resources are the Woodfield Historic District, Spring lake Historic District, Haynes Manor Historic District, Atlanta Memorial Park, and the Bobby Jones Golf Course. Five IFs were identified

within the APE and ESC of this project (Table 1). Three of the IFs described below were found either within Peachtree Creek or in shallow deposits on the bank of the creek.
