Abstract

The proposed project would widen Stevens Creek Road, starting at approximately 40 meters (130 feet) south of Mayo Road in Richmond County to approximately 145 meters (475 feet) north of Evans to Locks Road in Columbia County (Figures 1 and 2). The existing typical section of Stevens Creek Road consists of a two-lane roadway with rural shoulders. The proposed typical section would consist of two travel lanes with a central turn lane/raised median with urban shoulders. The urban shoulders would include bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The existing two-lane typical section would remain intact along the Bowen Pond dam, but bicycle and pedestrian improvements would occur in this area. The existing stop-controlled intersection at Stevens Creek Road and Evans to Locks Road would be converted to a roundabout. The proposed project would be constructed within the existing right-of-way (ROW), which is between 15 (4 meters) to 40 feet (12 meters) from the centerline.

Two previously recorded sites are within 1 km of the proposed project area. Site 9CB137 is a precontact and historic lithic scatter 425 meters east of the APE. The site was recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (Gumbert 1991a). Site 9RI444 is a historic house site 945 meters east of the APE. The site was recommended ineligible for the NRHP (Gumbert 1991b).
