Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. of Athens, Georgia, conducted a high probability reconnaissance level cultural resources survey of 1389 ha (3433 ac) in the Oconee National Forest, Georgia, for the U.S. Forest Service. Portions of 14 timber compartments in Greene, Jasper, and Putnam counties were investigated, and 122 archeological sites and 70artifact occurrences were recorded. Four of the sites had been previously located by the Forest Service, and were more intensely investigated during this project. Of the 122 sites recorded, only one, 9GE1485, has been recommended as eligible for listing on the National Register. This is a rock shelter, which is a rare site type in the Oconee National Forest. An additional 48 sites have been recommended as potentially eligible. These sites should be protected until their eligibility status can be determined through further testing. Two Historic period cemeteries were also recorded on this survey. Under the criteria established for cemeteries, these are not eligible for listing on the National Register. However, they should be protected according to accepted Forest Service procedures. The remaining 71 sites and 70 artifact occurrences have been recommended as ineligible for nomination because of previous disturbances or severally limited research potential. No further work is recommended for these sites.
