Abstract

In December 1990, Messrs. Robert Webb, John Doolin and Brian Gumbert of Law Environmental, conducted a cultural resources survey of approximately 67 hectares (161 acres) in Lumpkin County, Georgia for Mayes Sudderth and Etheredge, Inc. The project area is being considered as the site of the Lumpkin County airport. Since the project is under the auspices of the Federal Aviation Administration, it must be in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (Public Law 89-665; 80 STAT.915; 16 U.S.C. 470) as amended.

A review of the state site files and the National Register of Historic Places revealed no previously recorded sites within the survey area. Surface survey and shovel testing resulted in the identification and assessment of nine archeological sites and three isolated finds. Seven prehistoric (probably Archaic or Woodland) lithic scatters, a 19thK20th century rock wall and a 20th century liquor still site were detected.

Because of disturbances related to agriculture, silviculture and severe erosion, the recorded cultural resources are considered to be "clearly ineligible" for the National Register of Historic Places and no further work is recommended for the proposed airport project area.
