Abstract

Archaeological survey and testing of Transco Energy Ventures Company's 437 acre tract in Hart County, Georgia, was conducted by Brockington and Associates, Inc., during December 1991. Goals of the project were the location and evaluation of all cultural resources within the tract boundaries. Archival research included a review of state site files, examination of the list of National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) properties, and inspection of historic maps of the project area. Archaeological survey consisted of systematic 30 meter interval screened shovel testing of the entire tract, and nonsystematic surface collection of exposed surfaces. Site evaluation methods included short interval shovel testing and excavation of one by one meter units. No previously recorded archaeological sites or NRHP properties were located within the project tract. Archaeological survey resulted in the location and evaluation of six archaeological sites (9HA20, 9HA21, 9HA22, 9HA23, 9HA24, 9HA25) and seven isolated finds within the tract boundaries. Cultural components represented include one Woodland site (9HA21), small prehistoric lithic scatters, and late nineteenth/early twentieth century domestic sites. Of the six archaeological sites recorded during the survey, only 9HA21 is recommended eligible for the NRHP. Site 9HA21 will be avoided during proposed construction of ponds and water lines in the eastern portion of the project tract. It is recommended that cultural resources clearance to proceed with the proposed development be granted.
