An Archaeological Survey of Two Proposed Rc&d Areas

Abstract

This report summarizes the results of an archaeological survey at two RC&D project locations in Bryan and Liberty Counties, (Figure 1). The survey was conducted under a contractual agreement between the USDA Soil Conservation Service and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Georgia. Construction of the two facilities is being sponsored by the Coastal Soil and Water Conservation District and the governments of Bryan and Liberty Counties, Tivoli River Park (Figure 2) will be located between the communities and Keller in southeastern Bryan County. It consists of a 1.2 hectare (3 acre) area situated on the east bank of the Tivoli River along the Keller-Belfast Highway. The area is several kilometers coastline and approximately 40 kilometers (24 miles) south of Savannah. Jones Creek Park (Figure 3) will be located in eastern Liberty County and consists of 63 hectares (157 acres) of dry land and marsh bounded by Jones Creek, Interstate 95, and Isle of Wight Road. The park is several kilometers farther inland than Tivoli River Park and at ly 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Savannah. Fieldwork for the survey was conducted between June 20 and June 22,1979 and required 6 man days. Laboratory analysis and report preparation were carried out between June 23 and August 10, 1979. The surveyor was Greg Paulk, who was assisted by Bonnie Tutt.
