Abstract

This report documents the results of the Phase II cultural resource testing of five sites located in the proposed 400 acre Haig Mill Dam and Reservoir project area located to the north of Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia. The cultural resource testing was conducted by Garrow & Associates, Inc., Atlanta, for Colder Associates, Inc., Atlanta. The project focused on sites 9WD42, 9WD43, 9WD45, 9WD46, and 9WD48 to assess their eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Prehistoric components at two of the sites, 9WD42 and 9WD45, which probably date to the Woodland period, appear to be eligible for the NRHP. Both sites contain cultural features (rock hearths), limestone tempered pottery, and lithics. Prehistoric components at two other sites, 9WD43 and 9WD46, appear to have no research potential and they were assessed as ineligible for the NRHP. Testing at 9WD48, the remains of an historic mill race, included additional archival research and site mapping. No further work for 9WD48 is recommended because the site was recommended ineligible for the NRHP. A data recovery plan for 9WD42 and 9WD45 is presented.
