Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, project F-2-6(28) has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify, and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.

Specifically, the methodology employed included a pedestrian survey of the project corridor complemented by several subsurface tests, a review of pertinent literature relative to the project area, and an examination of the State Archaeological Site Files maintained at the University of Georgia. These methods failed to result in the location of significant archaeological remains which could potentially be affected by the proposed project. One site, however, was reported in 1951 on the Navy Supply School Campus (see attached site form). The status of the site at that time was reportedly “a11 gone.” Shovel testing here during the present survey confirmed that the site is no longer present, probably due to both natural and human alterations of the landscape.
