Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-056-2(18) in Towns County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

Proposed project STP-056-2(18)in Towns County would widen and reconstruct SR 2/SR 515 just north of the city of Young Harris. The project would begin at the intersection of CR 207/Pinecrest Road and would end approximately 984 feet east of CR 115. The existing right-of-way varies from approximately 115 feet to 315 feet. Required right-of way varies from approximately 13 feet to 66 feet. This project was previously surveyed by GDOT archaeologists in July of 1997 and October of 1996. In August of 1999 the project design underwent minor changes to lengthen the project approximately 590 feet on the eastern end (to 984 feet east of CR 115) and to add minor amounts of additional right-of-way at various locations along the project corridor. The current survey covers all areas not covered by previous surveys.
