Abstract

Project Number PI 0013816 is a part of the Georgia Department of Transportation's (GDOT) statewide bridge replacement effort and will replace the bridge located on State Route (SR) 201 over lanyard Creek int Whitfield County, Georgia. The bridge is located approximately 0.30 mile (0.48 kilometers) south of the Whitfield/Catoosa County Line (Figures 1 and 2), and approximately 7.8 miles (12.5 kilometers) northwest of the town of Dalton. The existing bridge was constructed in 1942 and assigned an overall sufficiency rating of 63.8 by GDOT during its May 2016 inspection. SR 201 is functionally classified as an Urban Minor Arterial and not a part of the National Network for Trucks. The existing typical section for SR 201 consists of two 11-foot travel lanes with approximately two-foot grassy shoulders and a posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour. The existing bridge structure is considered a plate pipe, arch, span, and rise structure. It consists of a steel double barreled culvert approximately 30 feet long. Significant corrosion is present in the metal culvert pipes, especially near the water line. The culvert would be replaced with a structure that meets current design and environmental standards. The existing right-of-way (ROW) along SR 201 is 40 feet (12 meters) total, or 20 feet (6 meters) on either side of the current SR 201 centerline.
