Abstract

A Phase I cultural resource survey of 113.2 acres was conducted for the proposed Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport Commuter Runway Project for the City of Atlanta by Garrow & Associates, Inc. The study tract is situated in an area of urban development characterized by residential and commercial properties in the northwest section of Clayton County, Georgia immediately south of Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, near the headwaters of the Flint River. Fieldwork was conducted between March 26 and May 8, 1992 by Tad Britt, Field Director, and Sterling Howard, Senior Field Technician. This survey employed pedestrian surface inspection and the systematic excavation of subsurface shovel test pits. Two prehistoric sites were discovered and delimited, with further testing being recommended to determine their cultural affiliation and potential eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Two historic properties, a house located at 4828 West Fayetteville Road and the Hart Family Cemetery, were examined and are considered to be potentially eligible for listing on the NRHP. During this survey, the location of a previously recorded nineteenth-century archaeological site known as Terrell's Mill (9CN31) may have been reidentified, but was found to have been destroyed since it was first reported. Further, eight mid twentieth-century house sites were located which are considered ineligible for listing on the NRHP.
