Abstract

A cultural resource survey was conducted on a proposed borrow pit location for the U.S. Army Camp Frank C. Merrill, in Lumpkin county, Georgia. The borrow fill will be used to cap the present landfill and to accomplish this, 11,850 cubic yards of earth will be needed to cover the landfill with two feet of earth. This is a mandatory requirement by the State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division. The field survey was conducted by the authors under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Army and the U.S.D.A. Forest Service. Camp Merrill is located on a portion of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The total area surveyed was approximately 5 acres which covers the south end of the ridge opposite the ammunition storage area. No cultural resources were found In the survey area and clearance is recommended.
