Cultural Resources Survey of the Proposed Center Transmission Line

Abstract

An intensive cultural resources survey undertaken along the proposed Center transmission line found two previously located prehistoric sites, 9JKll and 9JK15. No standing structures older than 50 years are within the viewshed of the proposed line. Site 9JKll is recommended potentially eligible to the NRHP by previous investigators and we concur with this recommendation. The site has buried stratified deposits of several components in relatively undisturbed context. However, the site lies outside of the area of potential effect and therefore the proposed project will have no effect on the site. 9JK15, an Archaic and Mississippi Period site, is also recommended potentially eligible to the NRHP, although it clearly has much less research potential. The main portion of the site, and perhaps all of it, lies to the west of the proposed right-of-way. The portion of the site within the proposed project area has very sparse artifacts (none were recovered by this survey) and has very little research potential. It is our opinion that construction of the transmission line will not adversely effect the cultural remains at 9JK15. Therefore, the principal investigator recommends that no cultural resources will be adversely affected by the proposed construction of the Center transmission line.
