Abstract

Data recovery was conducted at two ridge top lithic scatter sites on Corps of Engineers (Savannah District) property on Clarks Hill Lake. Data recovery consisted of the placement of 1 by 1 m tests across the site area, the results of which were used to guide the placement of block excavation units. 9Lc21 was determined to be a 200 m by 40 m plow zone site of Early and Middle Archaic affiliation. 9Lc22 was a 50 m diameter, knoll top, plow zone site of predominantly Middle Archaic affiliation. Neither site yielded evidence of features and both are interpreted as being reoccupied, limited activity sites in an Early to Middle Archaic settlement system. Two new sites, a quartz quarry/workshop and a multicomponent occupation site, were investigated because they were hypothesized to relate to 9Lc21 in a quartz reduction sequence.
