Abstract

This report presents the results of a cultural resources survey of the proposed 115/25 kV Banks Creek Substation (Oglethorpe Power Corporation Project No. 73740) located in Bulloch County, Georgia. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate cultural resources that may be impacted by the construction of the substation. The project area is a 1.1 ha (2.8 ac) tract located approximately 5 km (3 mi) northeast of Hopeulikit, Ga, facing two Chop Road (County Road 17), just east of U.S. Highway 25. At the time of the survey, October 20, 1994, the tract was in mature cotton. An existing transmission line runs along the east edge of the project area. Archival background research and intensive field survey, consisting of systematic surface inspection and the excavation of 20 shovel tests, was conducted by the author. One chert flake was found on the surface. Since three surrounding shovel tests were sterile, this was considered an artifact occurrence. No structures older than 50 years lie within view of the proposed project. Since no sites or potentially historic structures exist in the area of potential environmental effect, the project will have no effect on cultural resources.
