Abstract

The following report was prepared in conjunction with the proposed Scenic Square Substation and Tap Transmission Line in central Gwinnett County. Oglethorpe Power Corporation is proposing to construct a 115 kV transmission line that will pass in front of several standing structures that are over 50 years old. An archeological and historic structure survey conducted by Southeastern Archeological Services in March 1994 (Dukes and Malone 1994) identified two structures that were recommended eligible to the National Register of Historic Places at the local level of significance. These were two houses located on what was the Cates property, on Webb Ginn Road. The two houses, along with a marked cemetery and an unmarked cemetery, were viewed as related components of the Cates farm. Since the proposed transmission line was anticipated to create an adverse visual effect on the structures, Oglethorpe Power Corporation and the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources entered an agreement to take several steps to mitigate the adverse effect. One aspect of the agreement was to provide more documentation of this significant, but previously unidentified, historic property. The format of this report follows generally that of the Historic Property Information Form utilized in the preparation of National Register of Historic Places nominations in Georgia.
