Abstract

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) was contracted by Georgia Transmission Corporation of Tucker, Georgia to conduct an archaeological survey for the proposed Woodstock-Bells Ferry 115kV Tap (P 88883) in Cherokee County, Georgia. The Phase I survey was performed on June 23, 2017 by Jeff Thompson under the supervision of Paul D. Jackson, Principal Investigator. The purpose of this study was to determine if any prehistoric or historic properties exist within the limits of the project area, and if so, to document and assess each based on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. The lead Federal Agency for this project is the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service.

The project, as identified by Georgia Transmission Corporation, is a short (approximate 1/4 mile) transmission line tap from their existing Woodstock-Bells Ferry 115kV Transmission Line to their Cherokee Trail Substation on the south side of Highway 92 across from Bascomb/Carmel Church Road in Cherokee County, Georgia. The proposed project will involve the construction of a 115/25 kV substation. The subject property can be found on the 1992 Kennesaw, Georgia USGS 7.5’ series topographic quadrangle (Figure 1). Photographs depicting the present state of the land within the project area are provided (Figures 2-5).
