Abstract

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) was contracted by Georgia Transmission Corporation of Tucker, Georgia to conduct an archaeological survey for the proposed Sparks Tap (P79363) in Cook County, Georgia. The Phase I survey was performed on December 11 to 15, 2017 by Jeff Thompson and Chris Rivers, under the supervision of Paul D. Jackson, Principal Investigator. The purpose of this study was to determine if any prehistoric or historic properties exist within the limits of the project area, and if so, to document and assess each based on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. The lead Federal Agency for this project is the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service.

The proposed project is for the construction of an approximately 2 mile transmission line connecting the proposed Sparks S/S site at the intersection of Sparks Cutoff Road and SR 37 to an existing MEAG transmission line on the east side of I-75. The project area, as identified by Georgia Transmission Corporation, is an approximate 48.5-acre tract located north and west of the town of Adel. The project area is composed of a single linear corridor approximately 2.7 km long, along with several pre-existing access roads and a large block portion on the eastern side of I-75 approximately 450 m by 150 m in area. The subject property can be found on the 1973 Adel, Georgia USGS 7.5’ series topographic quadrangle (Figure 1). Photographs depicting the present state of the land within the project area are provided (Figures 2-5).
