Abstract

In June 2019, R.S. Webb & Associates (RSWA) conducted a Phase I archeological resources survey (research and fieldwork) of the Sunbury Boat Ramp improvements area [approximately 0.4 hectares (1.1 acres)] located south of Fort Morris Road in Sunbury, Liberty County, Georgia. The proposed improvements include: 1) the removal of a 1970s house, poured concrete, terrestrial debris and modern pilings immediately off-shore; and 2) leveling and grassing-over the project area surface so that it is suitable for vehicle/trailer parking. The project area is located on State of Georgia land, so a permit from the Office of the State Archaeologist was required to conduct the archeological survey (Official Code of Georgia, ยง 12-3-52). The survey was conducted to determine if archeological sites eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) will be affected by the proposed project. Such resources are assessed for significance using the NRHP eligibility criteria set forth in 36 CFR Part 60.4. In addition, the study was performed following survey guidelines set by the Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists (2014) and the U.S. Secretary of the Interior (Federal Register 1983).
