Abstract

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) was contracted by Georgia Transmission Corporation of Tucker, Georgia to conduct an archaeological survey for the proposed Potters Crossing Substation Site (P79335) in Jackson County, Georgia. The Phase I survey was performed on January 11, 2017 by Chris Rivers under the supervision of Paul D. Jackson, Principal Investigator. The purpose of this study was to determine if any prehistoric or historic properties exist within the limits of the project area, and if so, to document and assess each based on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. The lead Federal Agency for this project is the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service.

The project area, as identified by Georgia Transmission Corporation, is an approximate 4.35-acre tract located just southwest of Jefferson near the intersection of State Road 124 and Indian River Drive. The proposed project will involve the construction of a 115/25 kV substation. The subject property can be found on the 1964 (photorevised 1965) Jefferson, Georgia USGS 7.5’ series topographic quadrangle (Figure 1). Photographs depicting the present state of the land within the project area are provided (Figures 2-5).
