Abstract

From January through April 1995, a cultural resources survey was conducted on approximately 1013 acres of the Oconee National Forest in Greene, Jasper, Jones, and Putnam Counties, Georgia. The survey was conducted prior to timber harvesting, road construction and southern pine beetle management activities in Compartments, 101, 107, 115, 118, 121, 125, 126, 127, 130, 131, 134, and 175 on the Oconee District. Fourteen new archaeological sites were identified and three previously recorded sites were re-evaluated/recorded. One site is considered eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (GA081593), ten sites are considered potentially eligible (GA08-1552, GA08-1568, GA08-1569, GA08-1594, GA08-1596, GA08-1597, GA08-1598, GA08-1599, GA08-1601, GA08-1602), and six sites are considered ineligible (GA08-1595, GA08-1600, GA08-1603, GA08-1604, GA08-1605, GA08-1606). Nine ineligible isolated finds were also recorded. All ten potentially eligible sites and the one eligible site will be protected in place by avoidance. This project will have no effect on the eligible or potentially eligible sites in the project area.
