Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project IR-520-1(12) Richmond County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The proposed project would reconstruct and widen the interchange at I-520 and Wrightsboro Road in Augusta. The project as proposed would begin at a point approximately 650 feet east of the I-520 overpass then would extend westerly along Wrightsboro Road to a point approximately 850 feet west of the I-520 overpass. In addition, the southbound I-520 exit ramp would be extended 500 feet north of its present location and the northbound exit ramp would be extended 200 feet to the south. The proposed project would be approximately 0.78 miles in length along I-520 and approximately 0.28 miles in length along Wrightsboro Road. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was surveyed for the entire 1.06-mile length of the project corridor.
