Abstract

A reconnaissance level field survey was conducted by Southeastern Archeological Service, Inc. of Athens, Georgia, for the U.S. Forest Service in the Toccoa and Armuchee Ranger Districts of Chattahoochee National Forest. Timber stands totaling 942.5 ha (2329 ac) according to the Forest Service or 975.3 ha (2410 ac) according to our calculations in 25 compartments of the Toccoa Ranger District, and 180.4 ha (446 ac) in four compartments in the Armuchee Ranger District were surveyed from August 17 to October 2, 1992. One hundred and four sites and 7 artifact occurrences were investigated and recorded in the Toccoa Ranger District. Three other sites previously recorded by the Forest Service (but not field visited by the Forest Service) could not be relocated by this survey. They are probably misplaced on Forest Service maps. Six of the located and recorded sites were previously recorded by the Forest Service, but had not received state site numbers. Site density in the Toccoa District stands is one site per 9.06 ha (22.4 ac). In the Armuchee Ranger District 29 sites were investigated and recorded. These included one previously recorded site with a state site number. Site density in the Armuchee District stands is one site per 6.22 ha (15.4 ac). Of the 133 total recorded sites 24 are recommended as potentially eligible (Class II) for the National Register. The boundaries of these sites have been marked in the field with red and white candy-striped flagging. These sites should be protected until their eligibility status can be determined through further testing. One site is an historic cemetery which should be protected according to current State Law and Forest Service policies. The remaining 108 sites and 7 artifact occurrences are recommended ineligible for the National Register (Class III) and do not require any further work or attention.
