Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, and the Georgia Environmental Policy Act of 1991, projects EDS-27 (136) and (153), Haralson/Polk Counties have been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed projects' area of potential environmental effect. The proposed projects would consist of the widening and reconstruction of SR 1/US 27 between Buchanan and Cedar Town. Project EDS-27(136), Haralson/Polk Counties begins at the northern terminus of the Buchanan Bypass and extends northerly for a distance of approximately 16.89km (10.5mi) to SR 100. Project EDS-27(153), Haralson/Polk Counties begins at the northern end of Project EDS-27(136), Haralson/Polk Counties and would extend a distance of approximately 3.15km (l.96mi) to the Cedartown Bypass. The widening will vary from symmetrical to the east or west side of the roadway. The existing right-of-way varies between 24.38m to 30.48m (80 to 100ft). The proposed right-of-way would be a minimum of 91. 44m (300ft). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed right-of-way was conducted for the entire length of the projects' corridor.
