Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, Project EDS-545(22), Ware County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify, and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. Project EDS-545(22), Ware County, is a proposal to construct a bypass in Waycross from SR 50 to SR 4. The project would begin at the intersection of SR 50/ US 82 and CR 593 and continue northeasterly along CR 593 for approximately 0.2 mile, then shift to new location to Scapa Dryer Road/ CR 152. The project would then continue along the existing Scapa Dryer Road/CR 152, ending at the intersection with SR 4/US 1/US 23. The existing right-of- way along CR 152 varies from 80 to 100 feet; an additional 4 feet of right-of-way would be required for project construction along CR 152. Along the new location section and in the reconstructed curves, the required right-of-way would be 200 feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed right-of-way was conducted for the entire length of the proposed project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHVA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
