Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of I 966 and amendments thereto, project EDS-545(26), Toombs County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would widen US l from a point just south of the Altamaha River in Appling County, to the northern city limits of Lyons, Toombs County. This reevaluation was concerned with unit (26), the portion of US 1 that passes through the city of Lyons. A bypass on the west side of Lyons is proposed as an alternative to widening US l through downtown Lyons. This bypass would be on new location beginning at Little Rocky Creek south of the town of Santa Claus, and proceeds north along the western city limits of Lyons to a point north of Lyons just beyond Swift Creek. Near US 280 the bypass splits into two different alignments for approximately 1.5 miles before rejoining. The proposed bypass corridor would require approximately 250 feet of new right-of-way. The bypass would be approximately 6 miles long.
