Abstract

Environmental Corporation of America (ECA) has completed an Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the proposed subject site. The proposed undertaking would include replacing a wooden utility pole with a 51-foot tall wooden pole within a 10-foot by 10-foot (3- meter by 3-meter) area. The subject site is located at 1855 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, Clarke County, Georgia. ECA conducted a Phase I Archaeological Assessment of the Area of Potential Effects (APE) consisting of background research, field investigations, and preparation of this report. The APE for direct effects includes a proposed approximate 10-foot by 10-foot (3-meter by 3-meter) area, and all the immediately adjacent areas. Approximately 0.002 acres (0.0009 hectares) was surveyed for this undertaking. This Archaeological Assessment was conducted in order to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking, on the project site, might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. A search of the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) identified nine previously recorded archaeological sites and four previously recorded cultural resource reports within a 1-mile background research radius. Report 2422 is located within the APE for direct effects; however, no cultural material was identified within the proposed APE for direct effects. We conclude that the undertaking would not affect any historic or prehistoric archaeological resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Therefore, for archaeological cultural resources, we recommend a finding of No Effect for the undertaking at the project site.
