Abstract

On Thursday, December 1, 1977, Liz Lyon, Pete Malphurs and I made a field review of the proposed extension of Old Alabama Road. Dr. Larson was offered the opportunity to go along, but declined since he felt that he was quite familiar with the proposal and anticipated impact. Prior to visiting the project, we talked to John Wade in his office. The discussion seemed to give Dr. Lyon a feeling for the local opinions on the historic district and an understanding of the local desire for access into the project area. The field review revealed that most of the direct project impact had occurred with construction of the middle portion of the route. However, Dr. Lyon gave no indication of her position on the unconstructed segment. The only agreement that was reached was that the strip mining adjacent to U.S. 41 was having a severe impact on the Etowah River and land use in that general area.
