Abstract

On October 10-11, 2007, New South Associates conducted an archaeological survey of three proposed to water detention facilities on Old Alabama Road in Bartow County. The project is intended provide water detention facilities during the reconstruction of Old Alabama Road. The current survey was conducted at the request of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) in advance of the Old Alabama Road reconstruction project. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) includes a total of approximately 4.7 acres in three locations along Old Alabama Road near Emerson in Bartow County. Area A is located northwest of the City of Emerson, west of SR 293. Area B is located southwest of the Emerson City limits, behind South Central Middle School. Area C is located north of the new alignment corridor of Old Alabama Road, southwest of Emerson. A total of 23 shovel tests were excavated within the APE, 12 tests in Area A, six tests in Area B, and five tests in Area C. One new archaeological site was located in Area C. One other site was recorded outside Area A. Neither site is recommended as eligible for NRHP nomination and no further work is recommended.
