Abstract

During June, 1988, Gulf Engineers & Consultants, Inc., and R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. conducted archeological data recovery at Site 9Me219 on the Fort Benning Military Reservation. The site is located on a small knoll above the floodplain of Upatoi Creek; It is situated in the right-of-way for a planned access ramp to U.S. Highway 27 /280 and it will be destroyed when the ramp is built. This site is a small prehistoric site with no subsurface in situ features and few diagnostic artifacts. Lithic artifacts comprised the bulk of the artifact assemblage, although five ceramic sherds dating from the Early Woodland Period were recovered. Analysis of the artifact assemblage Indicates that this is a two component site, with an older component dating from the Archaic period, and a younger component dating from the Early Woodland period; results of use-wear analysis of the lithic tools and the scarcity of ceramic sherds Indicate that Site 9Me219 was a limited activity campsite. Because of the absence of in situ cultural features, this site no longer is considered eligible for the National Register.
