Abstract

Archaeological and historical evaluation of the proposed 52.4 acre Plant McIntosh Combustion Turbine Site (3), in Effingham County, Georgia, was conducted for Savannah Electric and Power Company. Archaeological and historical research consisted of field survey and examination of relevant archival resources. Survey methods consisted of pedestrian walkover, 30 meter interval screened shovel testing, and 15 meter dog leash surface collections. The majority of the proposed site has sustained moderate surface disturbance from timbering and plant construction. The northwestern corner of the site has been graded to subsoil. Archaeological survey resulted in the definition of the eastern and southeastern boundaries of a previously recorded multicomponent archaeological site, 9EF187. As determined in a previous investigation (Gardner 1991), the site is limited to surface contexts only. The results of the current investigation support the previous recommendation of ineligibility of 9EF187 for the National Register of Historic Places. No further archaeological work is recommended within the currently defined combustion turbine site boundaries. In addition, supplementary sources indicate that the proposed project will have no adverse visual or audible impact on National Register listed properties.
