Abstract

In December 2018, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted an archaeological survey and historic resources survey assessment for the proposed State Route (SR) 9 and Oxbo Road intersection improvements in Roswell, Fulton County, Georgia. The City of Roswell proposes to realign the current offset intersection of SR 9/Atlanta Street and Oxbo Road (Figure 1). The purpose of the archaeological survey was to identify sensitive archaeological resources in the project area and to assess any impact the project may have on those resources. Prior to the initiation of fieldwork, EPEI archaeologists conducted background research at the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) at the University of Georgia in Athens and online at Georgia’s Natural Archaeological, and Historic Resources Geographic Information System (GNAHRGIS). This research sought information on previous cultural resources studies in the area and archaeological sites recorded near the project corridor. These data sets were used in the preparation of the cultural context and guided the field design and artifact analysis. Background research found that there are 20 previously recorded archaeological sites within a 1-kilometer radius of the project area (Table 1). There are 12 previous surveys within a 1-kilometer radius of the proposed project. No previously recorded sites were identified within the archaeological survey area for the proposed project.
