Abstract

On 19 January 1998, the Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections (MCX-CMAC) was contacted by Fort Benning, Georgia, personnel requesting assistance with the physical rehabilitation of the archaeological collections, both material remains and associated documentation, for which they are responsible. Dr. Michael K. Trimble, MCX-CMAC director, designated Natalie Drew, staff archivist, to contact Fort Benning in order to provide further guidance. The first phase of the Fort Benning Archaeological Collections Stabilization project is summarized in the Archaeological Collections Condition Assessment for Fort Benning, Georgia, documents the initial efforts conducted by the MCX-CMAC.

Collections were transferred to St. Louis for stabilization. The scope of work directed that those collections with items categorized under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA, P.L. 601-101) be stabilized first. Once those materials (both materials remains and accompanying associated documentation) had been physically stabilized, these materials were to be returned to Fort Benning so that

Dr. Chris Hamilton could complete his NAGPRA consultation with Native American tribal groups.
