Abstract

Cardno, Inc. (Cardno) has completed archaeological and historic resources survey of part of the proposed Dalton Expansion Project, in Georgia. This letter details Cardno's findings and management recommendations specifically for two pipe yards, provisionally designated as the Calhoun 1 and Calhoun 2 pipe yards, temporary facilities proposed as a part of construction (Figure 1). These will be temporary-use facilities that will serve as equipment and material storage areas during construction. Possible modifications to these yards include the installation of perimeter fencing, temporary lighting, and the laying of a bed of gravel to existing ground surfaces. The yards will be returned to their original state following construction. Cardno archaeologists completed phase I survey of the proposed sites for the Calhoun 1 and 2 pipe yards in September of 2016. Shovel tests were excavated at approximately 30-m intervals along transects spaced at roughly 30-m intervals. Shovel tests were not excavated in areas of severe slope, or in areas where streams, wetlands, or other bodies of standing water were present. Shovel tests were excavated to a maximum depth of 80 centimeters below surface (cmbs), or until culturally sterile clay subsoil was encountered. All soil was screened through .25-inch hardware fabric and artifacts were collected and kept separate by excavated provenience. A total of seven shovel tests were excavated at both pipe yards (see Figure 1 ). An additional 59 shovel tests were no digs as a result of the majority of the project area being covered in concrete. On both of the proposed pipe yards, soils were very shallow and highly compacted, seldom exceeding 10 cmbs. While no areas of exposed clay subsoil were observed during surface inspection, clay subsoil was encountered at relatively shallow depths (< 15 cmbs) across the entire proposed yard. The typical shovel test profile exhibited a strong brown clay loam layer of approximately 5 centimeters (cm) in thickness, overlying a layer of strong brown clay that ranged in thickness between 10 and 15 cm. Cardno's archaeological survey of the proposed Calhoun 1 and Calhoun 2 pipe yards yielded no cultural remains in surface or subsurface contexts. One historic structure, a warehouse located on Old Belwood Rd. was observed and identified within the APE. This structure is described below.
