Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., has completed an intensive cultural resource survey of the proposed Suwanee Creek Greenway Project in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The survey was completed for the City of Suwanee, through the engineering firm of Jordan, Jones, and Goulding. The project consists of a 3.5 km (2.2 mi) long hard surface bicycle trail in the floodplain of Suwanee Creek. The trail begins at Martin Farm Road, where it will connect with the exiting Richard Trice Trail. It terminates to the southwest near the Buford Highway bridge over Suwanee Creek. Most of the trail will consist of a hard surface measuring 2.4 m (8 ft) wide. However, portions of the trail that cross wetlands will be elevated on a 1.8 m (6 ft) wide boardwalk. The area of potential effect is defined as a 20-m wide strip centered on the proposed trail.

Archival research revealed no known archeological sites or historical resources in the area of potential effect. Forty-one shovel tests were excavated within the proposed right-of-way of the trail to locate previously undetected sites. All of these tests were negative, and no sites were identified within the project corridor. It is therefore the opinion of the Principal Investigator that the proposed project will not affect any cultural resources and should be given clearance to proceed.
