To accommodate the expansion of an industrial park in southeastern Tifton, the Georgia Transmission Corporation plans to shift a 550-m (1,800-ft) long section of transmission line to the east. Instead of running east and then south from the existing Magnolia Park Substation as it does now, the new line will run south and then east to rejoin the exiting transmission line at structure 6. The new section of transmission line is 550 m (1,800 ft) long and will require a corridor 30 m (100 ft) wide. The proposed new corridor was archeologically surveyed on December 14, 2007 by Thomas H. Gresham of Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. The goal of the survey was to ensure that significant archeological sites (those eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places) would not be adversely affected by the project. The existing corridor was previously archeologically surveyed (Webb 1989) and was not re-examined. No archeological sites were encountered in the area of potential effect for the proposed rerouting project. Because of the absence of archeological sites we recommend that the project be given clearance to proceed.
