Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted for the Tennessee Valley Authority prior to construction of the proposed substation near Alpha in Murray County, Georgia. The 25 acre project tract is located approximately 2.6 miles east of the Conasauga River. Much of the investigated area has been impacted by both farming and clear-cutting activities. Aside from recent trash disposal, no evidence of past human activity was encountered. The survey was performed August 8, 1995, by Garrow & Associates, Inc. A combined pedestrian survey and subsurface testing program was pursued throughout the project tract. Background research prior to the fieldwork determined that n o previously recorded archaeological sites or National Register of Historic Places properties are located within one mile of the project tract. The literature search also indicates no historically significant individuals or events are associated with the project tract. This survey identified no archaeological sites within the project tract; no standing structures are present within the project tract or within view of the tract. Cultural resources clearance to construct is recommended.
