Abstract

The engineering and design firm of Clark Patterson Lee contracted with Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. to conduct an archeological survey and prepare a report of the findings for a cemetery south of the intersection of Dawsonville Road and Shallowford Road, on the west side of Gainesville, Georgia (Figure 1) . This cemetery was recorded as the Webster Family Cemetery by Sybil Wood McRay in 1971. The City of Gainesville is considering constructing a two-lane road through the property containing the cemetery, and they wished to know more about the cemetery, primarily how many graves are present. To allow for the possibility of moving the cemetery, the City requested that an archeological study of the cemetery be conducted as spelled out in Official Code of Georgia section 36-72-5(2), which states:

A report prepared by an archeologist stating the number of graves believed to be present and their locations as can be determined from the use of minimally invasive investigation techniques, including remote sensing methods and the use of metal probes, which activities shall not require a permit.
