Abstract

Per your request, I delineated the Johnson Cemetery using minimally invasive archeological techniques on Friday, May 19, 2006. The cemetery is located in a pasture on the northwest side of Alcovy Road northeast (but within the city limits) of the town of Covington. The cemetery is depicted on the Covington USGS quadrangle map (see attached site location map) and can be seen to occupy a broad ridge top.

The cemetery today consists of a 14 by 16 foot slab of concrete in which are embedded six tombstones and a family marker (see Photo 1 ). This slab is on the east side of a fence that separates an active cow pasture to the east from a hay field to the west (see Photo 2 and cemetery map). Thus, the cemetery is in a cow pasture. A set of wooden fence posts immediately surround the slab, and once supported a fence that kept cattle out. The fence is now mostly down. There are some metal railings on the ground around the slab that may be remnants of an earlier, more substantial fence.
