Abstract

Areas slated for development in the Elbert and Coldwater Creek Recreation Areas, Richard B. Russell Multiple Resource Area were surveyed for the presence of cultural resources. This survey was carried out using systematic surface reconnaissance and a probabilistic shovel testing strategy. Thirty-seven previously unrecorded sites were located while eleven previously recorded sites in areas of impact were revisited. Components identified cover a temporal range from the Early Archaic (10,000 - 8000 B.P.) to the Historic periods. Four of the sites identified that will be impacted appear to have potentially significant archaeological resources (Sites 11, 34, 35 and 9EB368). We recommend that the potentially significant cultural resources present at these sites be avoided and monitored against future impact. Should this alternative prove unfeasible in any cases, limited testing and data recovery is recommended.
