Abstract

In advance of the proposed development of multifamily housing on an approximately 19-acre tract in DeKalb County, Georgia by LDG Development, Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey to identify significant archaeological resources which might be affected by the proposed development. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) consists of a parcel (Parcel ID 15 151 09 051) measuring 19 acres located at 2648 Candler Parkway. The survey was conducted based on the findings and recommendations of a cultural resources records review and reconnaissance survey of the APE conducted in 2019 (Dunn and Wood 2019). The 2019 investigation identified an unrecorded historic archaeological site and the potential for precontact era sites within the APE, and as a result the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) recommended an intensive Phase I survey be conducted of the tract prior to development (Dixon 2019). This report details the Phase I survey. As a result of the survey, the historic site was located and recorded, while no other archaeological resources were identified within the APE. The site, recorded as state site 9DA186, represents a twentieth century farm occupied from at least 1940 through circa 1980. The site consisted of at least one residential structure and several surrounding outbuildings. The structures are no longer present, having burned and been razed. Due to the disturbance, the site lacks integrity and significant data potential, and is thus recommended not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
