Abstract

The proposed project would replace the existing bridge structure (Georgia Department of Transportation [GDOT] Bridge 215-0009-0) on State Route (SR) 520/United States Route (US) 280 over the Chattahoochee River in Columbus (Figure 1). The existing bridge is a 398 meter (m) (1,306 foot [ft]) long by 21.5 m (70.5 ft) wide four-lane, three-span steel stringer bridge. A replacement bridge, designed to meet current structural and geometric standards, would be constructed in the same location. The total length of the proposed project is approximately 1.4 kilometers (km) (0.9 miles [mi]). Right-of-way (ROW) would be required for construction of the proposed project, but exact amounts are unknown at this time. Existing ROW varies between 31.6 m (103.7 ft) and 61.8 m (202.8 ft) in total width in the portion of the project located in Muscogee County, Georgia. For the portion of the project in Russell County, Alabama, the existing ROW varies between 92.4 m (303.2 ft) and 280.3 m (919.7 ft) in total width along SR 520/US 280. Along Brickyard Road in Russell County, north of SR 520/US 280, the total existing ROW width is 40.7 m (133.5 ft).
