Abstract

This report summarizes the results of an archaeological and historical survey conducted at the request of the Engelhard Minerals and Chemicals Corporation at their kaolin mining facility in Washington County, Georgia (Figures 1 and 2). The survey was performed on May 9, 1979 by Gary D. Barber, Laboratory of Archaeology, University of Georgia. Dr. Paul R. Fish of the University's Department of Anthropology served as principal investigator. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance provided by Mr. James Howell of the Washington County Mine in defining the boundaries of the project area. The survey's objectives were to determine if cultural resources were present within the project area and to determine what impact the project might have on these resources. The project area consisted of 0.2 acres of wet land located at a proposed crossing on Bluff Creek. The 12 meter right-of-way parallels an existing county road 65 meters to the southeast. From Bluff Creek the project area extends approximately 35 meters to the northeast and about 65 meters to the southwest.
