Abstract

Between March 1 and 26, 2021, Brockington conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of the Warnell Farms Tract in Bryan County, Georgia. The investigation consisted of an archaeological and architectural survey of the 801-acre project tract and the surrounding viewshed. This cultural resources investigation was carried out for Resources and Land Consultants, LLC, of Savannah, Georgia, in partial fulfilment of guidelines established for Section 404 of the Clean Water Act permit. Background research conducted on Georgia’s Natural, Archaeological, and Historic Resources Geographic Information System (GNAHRGIS) identified seven previous cultural resources investigations, seven previously recorded archaeological sites, and four previously recorded historic resources within 1.0 kilometer of the current project tract.

The archaeological field survey included systematic visual reconnaissance and 30-meterinterval shovel testing. Our field investigation identified six archaeological sites within the project tract (9BN1605, 9BN1606, 9BN1628, 9BN1629, 9BN1630, and 9BN1631) and three isolated finds. All six sites are historic artifact scatters dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, none of which are recommended eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

The architectural field survey consisted of a visual pedestrian walkover of the project tract and its viewshed. No newly recorded historic resources were identified during the survey and the previously recorded historic sites are not within the current project viewshed. No additional cultural resources management considerations are warranted for this project.
