Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Cultural Resources Survey of the proposed Leesburg Bypass in Lee County, Georgia (GDOT Project STP-0001-00(420), PI #0001420). The project was undertaken for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) in order to fulfill the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The proposed project corridor is new alignment, running roughly east to west between S.R. 195 and U.S. 19. It extends approximately 3.5 kilometers (2.18 mi.) with between 38 and 70 meters (124 and 229 ft.) of rightof-way (ROW). The survey involved systematic shovel testing in undisturbed areas and surface examination in areas with surface visibility. Two new archaeological sites (9LE159 and 9LE160) and one isolated find (IF 1) were located within the project ROW. Both sites are late-nineteenth- to early-twentieth-century artifact scatters, while the isolate is a prehistoric chert flake. The sites and the isolate possess little research potential and are recommended not eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). No further archaeological treatment of the Leesburg Bypass is recommended.
