Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants Inc. has completed a Phase I Cultural Resources Survey of the 300 Commerce Avenue Property in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia. The goal of this cultural resources survey was to identify potentially significant archaeological and historical resources within the surveyed area and to evaluate the eligibility of the identified resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The Archaeological Area of Potential Effect (APE) consists of 8.99 acres located immediately south of Commerce Avenue. There were no previously recorded archaeological sites within the Archaeological APE. No newly recorded archaeological sites were identified within the Archaeological APE. The Historic Resources APE consists of a direct/physical APE and an

indirect/visual APE. The direct/physical Historic Resources APE consists of the same 8.99 acres as the Archaeological APE. A 660-foot roadbed segment of a spur of the Atlanta, Birmingham, and Atlantic Railroad is within the direct/physical Historic Resources APE. It has been recommended NRHP ineligible as part of this report. A historic auto repair shop and historic water tower were identified within the indirect/visual Historic Resources APE. Both resources were recommended NRHP ineligible as part of this report.
