Abstract

A survey has been completed for sections of the proposed Pinhoti Trail crossing the ridges and valleys of the Armuchee Ranger District. It is 59 miles in length and begins near High Point and ends at Dug Mountain. Prior to the beginning of the survey, a background investigation was completed to determine which areas needed actual survey because some of the trail will be on old roads and systems roads, which does not need to be surveyed. Also some of the sections are within previously surveyed units which will not need to be surveyed either. Approximately 36 miles of trail were surveyed for this project and ten sites are within the trail corridor. Six of these sites are eligible or potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and require preservation, interpretation and minor changes in the trail corridor. Two of the six have been previously surveyed and recorded. The other four sites are not eligible for the National Register. These projects are directed towards identifying and recording cultural resource properties, both prehistoric and historic, in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the USDA Forest Service Southern Region Programmatic Agreement, and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia SHPO, and NEPA.
