Abstract

Cultural resources survey of Oglethorpe Power Corporation's proposed 2.1 acre (0.85 hectares) Brays 46/25KV substation, in Washington County, Georgia, was conducted by Brockington and Associates, Inc. Goals of the project were the location and evaluation of all cultural resources which might be impacted by the construction, operation, and maintenance of this facility. Archaeological and historical research included of examination of relevant archival resources and field survey. Survey methods consisted of systematic 30 meter interval screened shovel testing, nonsystematic surface collection of the entire site area, and evaluation of visual impact to standing structures surrounding the project site. No significant (listed, eligible, or potentially eligible for the NRHP) cultural resources are present within the site boundaries. One archaeological site (9WG57) was located partially within the project boundaries. However, past agricultural land use practices and erosional processes have severely impacted the site, leaving it with poor integrity. The proposed substation will have no adverse visual effect on significant historical structures. Based on the findings of this cultural resources survey, it is recommended that the proposed substation project be given cultural resources clearance to proceed.
