Abstract

Archaeologists with the LAMAR Institute conducted excavations at Fort Argyle (9BN28) and survey of its surrounding environs (approximately 150 acres) from January to March, 1996 as part of a Legacy Project administered by Fort Stewart Military Reservation, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental and Natural Resources Division, Environmental Branch. Two previously recorded sites (9BN28 and 9BN121) were re-examined, and two new sites (9BN131 and 9BN132) were recorded. Site 9BN28 was examined by 82 square meters of excavation. The remains of two forts, three buildings, and numerous features and colonial period artifacts were found. Shovel tests and 10 square meters were excavated at Site 9BN131. This site contains a late eighteenth- to early nineteenth-century settlement, as evidenced by features and material culture. Site 9BN132 was shovel tested, but it contained only a low frequency, shallow deposit of nondiagnostic aboriginal chipped stone and pottery. More work is recommended at 9BN28 and 9BN13l.
